One of the biggest highlights of Animethon is the Cosplay Contest, a live event which allows contestants to show off their costumes in a live setting for prizes! Trophies! Eternal Glory! and Bragging Rights! We only have space for approximately 30-50 people/teams, so please read the rules and sign up quickly for your chance to be a part of Animethon history!


1.1 Contestants are encouraged to pre-register for the contest online or onsite at room 8-203 on Saturday, August 11, between 9:30am – 1:00pm. If you pre-registered online, please check-in at room 8-203 on Saturday, August 11 before 1:00pm so we can be sure you are still participating!

1.2 On Saturday, August 11, all contestants must arrive at room 8-203 by 2:00pm for instructions and pre-judging of costumes.

1.3 The Cosplay Contest will last from approximately 4:30 - 6:00pm, with an additional 30 mins for judges’ deliberations and award presentation from 6:00pm-6:30pm. After the judges have finished deliberating, the winners will be announced. Contestants must be on hand to accept awards.

1.4 Winners in the Cosplay Contest will be selected for the following categories:
Best in Show
Best Costume
Best Performance
Fan Favourite
Honorable Mention – Best First Timer
Honorable Mention – Mr/Ms. Congeniality


2.1 Costumes and props must be suitable and appropriate for all ages. Costumes should have a theme consistent with what Animethon celebrates – ie, from anime, comics, video games, or pop culture. Costumes and props should adhere to general Animethon rules and regulations including the weapons and props policy. Exceptions may be made by the Cosplay Coordinator or Director of Programming.

2.2 Only handmade costumes are eligible to win the Best Costume award. Costumes created with the help of friends or family is accepted, however more than 50% of the costume has to be made by the contestant. Prefabricated costumes will be allowed as long as it has been substantially altered by the contestant (at least 70%).

2.3 Contestants can enter the contest individually, or as part of a team. If you enter as part of a team, your team will be judged together for the purposes of the Best in Show and Best Performance awards. However, your costumes will still be judged individually for the purposes of the Best Costume award.

2.4 There is a 1.5 minute – 2 minute time limit for all performances. If the performance goes over the time limit, the contestant will be disqualified. Exceptions CAN be made on a case by case basis – please contact the Cosplay Coordinator for more details. All skits must be family friendly.

2.5 Music
2.5.1 For Skits. If you have a music track that you would like to use specifically, please email the mp3 to the Cosplay Coordinator as part of your registration. No music can be accepted at the event itself – please email it to the Cosplay Coordinator in advance.
2.5.2 For Walk-ons. If you are doing a walk-on, background music will be playing in the background. If you have a music track that you would like to use specifically, please email the mp3 to the Cosplay Coordinator as part of your registration. No music can be accepted at the event itself – please email it to the Cosplay Coordinator in advance. Otherwise, Animethon will provide random, upbeat music for you.

2.6 Judges will give their ratings based on the following criteria:
Performance: (100 points)
· Conception / Creativity of the Skit (30 points)
· Entertainment / Audience Enjoyment (30 points)
· Performing Skills (15 points)
· Faithfulness to the story and characters of the original work. (25 points)
Costume: (100 points)
· Construction (50 points)
· Faithfulness to the original character OR originality. (35 points)
· WOW Factor, Props, and such. (15 points)

2.7 Safety/Cleanliness
2.7.1 Devices such as flash bombs, any kind of pyrotechnic device, or any type of device that causes staining or a large scattering of objects are prohibited. Scattering of objects is allowed so long as it complies with above rules. Anything that takes time to clean up on stage is not allowed as well. These may become potential hazards to remaining entrants. Using fire and liquids on stage are prohibited. Smoke related special effects are prohibited.

2.8 Permission is granted to Animethon 19 to use any photographs/video taken as future promotion material for future events and dealings. Secondary Media coverage may be present at the event. All media captured by Secondary Media will be under their rules and regulations of fair media usage and not that of Animethon’s.

2.9 Due to the size of the main events room, contestants will be required to use the provided microphones for the live audio portion of their performance. This is to ensure that the audience will be able to hear you.


3.1 There are two ways to enter the contest:

3.1.1 Pre-register via the website using the Cosplay Sign-up Form - Now closed. The form will ask you for the following information:
Your first & last name
Your Email
Your Phone number
The character you are portraying
The series your character is from
Is this your first time entering a Cosplay Contest?
Whether you made your costume yourself
A short summary of what you intend to do as your performance. If you do not intend to perform, and only wish to model your costume for the judges and audience, then please just note that you plan to do a ‘walk-on’.
If you wish to participate in a team, please provide the details of your other members (ie, each person’s name, character portrayed, series the character is from, and whether the costume was self constructed). Note, if you are registering as part of a group, only 1 person from the team needs to complete the form.
If you have background music you would like to use during your performance, please upload the music as a .mp3 file in the form provided after you successfully sign-up. MP3s are the only format I can accept your music. If you do not have background music, please state in the additional information section, “I don’t have specific music and would like to use Animethon’s music.”

3.1.2 You can also register on site. Please come to room 8-203 on Saturday, August 11, between 9:00am – approximately noon (exact times to be announced). We will be accepting on-site registration during this time.
