Karaoke Contest

Come and show us your vocal talents! Sing your heart out and win prizes in our Karaoke showcase.

1. Contest Format

  • 1.1 Contestants are encouraged to pre-register for Animethon’s Karaoke Contest due to the complications of organizing on a first come, first served basis. Pre-registration closes on Sunday, July 31 OR when the limit of 40 entries has been reached.
  • 1.2 Preliminaries for Animethon’s Karaoke Contest will take place on [date]. Only contestants present for the preliminaries may advance to the finals.
  • 1.3 Unlike the past few years, contestants are able to sing their full song for both preliminaries and finals.
  • 1.4 The coordinator requests that all contestants be punctual as the performance order will be set beforehand. Finalists MUST sign-in 30 minutes prior to the finals starting time or they will be disqualified.
  • 1.5 The Karaoke Contest will last approximately [tbd hours], with an additional [tbd time] for judging.
  • 1.6 The names of the finalists will be posted on the board at the registration desk shortly after the preliminaries. The winners of the Karaoke Contest will be announced at the closing ceremony. Contestants must be present to accept the awards.
  • 1.7 Winners in the karaoke contest will be selected as follows: - First Place - Second Place - Third Place - Honorary Mention
  • 1.8 Scoring Metrics (Disclosed for the first time ever!) There are 3 aspects of your performance that the judges will score you on: - Technical: Pitch, vocal agility, tempo, etc. - Enthusiasm: How well you display the emotions conveyed by a song, whether slow or up-beat. - Stage Presence: This is basically how you carry yourself on stage. Hand gestures, movements, audience interactions and such all fall into this category. It is generally a bad idea to sing standing still for the whole song.

2. Rules and Regulations

  • 2.1 Contestant must be a registered convention attendee in order to participate.
  • 2.2 In the event of a cancellation or no-show, interested parties present at the preliminaries who did NOT pre-register for the competition will be allowed to participate until the limit of 40 entries has been reached.
  • 2.3 Performances can be solo or group entries. Groups are limited to four per group, and you may only enter once. You may not enter this competition as both a group and a solo entry, or as a member of multiple groups. Non-singing backup dancers and such are not permitted.
  • 2.4 Songs must be from anime, Japanese video games, Japanese drama or soaps, J-pop, J-rock, J-rap, J-R&B, or Japanese folk. English or other non-Japanese songs from the dubbed version of an anime series, pop-culture show or Japanese video game are also acceptable. If you have any further questions regarding this, please email the coordinator at:
  • 2.5 Participants must choose 2 songs in order to avoid duplicates in the competition. This is a first come, first served basis. Finalists may change their song in the finals as long as said song is not already in use.
  • 2.6 No actual instruments will be permitted as we do not have the appropriate equipment to accommodate them.
  • 2.7 Songs must be no shorter than 3:00 minutes in duration, and no longer than 6:30 minutes.
  • 2.8 Confirmed pre-registered participants have until one week before the start of Animethon to change their song selections for the preliminary round.
  • 2.9 For those that register on the day of preliminaries, please make sure that your song of choice has an instrumental version available online. An easy way to tell (besides Googling) is to search for song name + “instrumental” on Singing along with the original vocals is unfortunately NOT allowed in the Karaoke Contest. But you are certainly welcome to come sing your heart out at Open Mic Karaoke for just that!

3. How to register for the contest

  • 3.1 There are 2 ways to register for this contest:
  • 3.1.1 Pre-register by emailing the coordinator at and provide the following:
    • your name as well as the correct way to pronounce it, because the MC is very scared of butchering people’s names.
    • the song name, original artist, and anime or game (if applicable) of your 2 songs and which one is your top song choice
    • the instrumental version of both songs (vocal-cut versions must be approved by the coordinator) in an audio format playable on a PC
If the files are too big to attach and send through email, you can: - split it into 2 emails and attach 1 song per email - upload to major online storage websites such as and attach the file link - bring the songs in a portable flash drive to the preliminaries Do not hesitate to ask the coordinator for help should you run into problems with any of the above.
  • 3.1.2 Pre-register on the Animethon website using the Karaoke Sign-Up Form. Don’t forget to bring or upload your own instrumental songs!
  • 3.1.3 If you have any questions or concerns, please email Yan at karaoke[at]animethon[dot]org
