Crossplay Pageant

Contest Format

  • 1.1 Contestants are encouraged to pre-register into the contest via the online form. At the event please check-in with the Crossplay Coordinator either by email or in person at the pageant 30 minutes prior to the start time, so we can be sure you are still participating! If you do not check in by this time, your spot may be given to someone else. There are 15 spots, if we fill up there will be a stand-by list.
  • 1.2 Contestants must arrive at the MPR approximately 30 minutes before the start of the contest.
  • 1.3 There will be a pre-judging for the Best Costume Award in the MPR prior to starting (please arrive early). If you wish for your costume to be judged for costume construction, please come to the MPR early. No Costume Judging will be taking place while contestants are on stage or otherwise.
  • 1.4 The Crossplay Contest will last approximately 60 mins, with an additional 30 mins for judges’ deliberations and award presentation. After the judges have finished deliberating, the winners will be announced. Contestants must be on hand to accept awards.
  • 1.5 Winners will be selected in the following categories:
    • Crossplay Mr or Miss
    • Crossplay Best Costume
    • Crossplay Runner Up - Miss
    • Crossplay Runner Up - Mister

Rules and Regulations

  • 2.1 Costumes and props must be suitable and appropriate for all ages. Costumes should have a theme consistent with what Animethon celebrates – anime, comics, video games, or pop culture. Costumes and props should adhere to general Animethon Rules and Regulations including the Weapons and Props Policy. Questions about props or costumes may be answered, and exceptions may be made, by the Cosplay Coordinator or Head of Security depending on circumstance.
  • 2.2 Talent Performances should adhere to a family-friendly rating, no profanity, nudity, or overly-violent content. No exceptions will be made on this point, so if you are concerned about your content, please ask beforehand; any breakage of this rule will result in disqualification and possible removal from further contests with Animethon or ATOA.
  • 2.3 Only handmade costumes are eligible to win the Best Costume award. Costumes created with the help of friends or family is accepted, however more than 50% of the costume has to be made by the contestant. Prefabricated costumes will be allowed as long as it has been substantially altered by the contestant (at least 70%).
  • 2.4 Contestants can enter the contest individually, or as part of a team. If you enter as part of a team, your team will be judged together for the purposes of the Best in Show award. However, your costumes will still be judged individually for the purposes of the Best Costume award.
  • 2.5 There is a 3 minute time limit for all talent performances. If the talent performance goes over the time limit, the contestant will be disqualified. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis. Talent performances are optional this year.
  • 2.6 Music is optional. If you have a music track you’d like to use for your Talent Performance, please upload or send the mp3 to the Crossplay Coordinator as part of your pre-registration. Alternatively, if you are registering on the day of Animethon, then please provide a copy of the mp3 on a USB stick at the time of registration. The music must be in mp3 format, and must be on a USB stick. No other format of music will be accepted at the event itself.
  • 2.7 Judges will give their ratings based on the following criteria:
    • All entrants must be in either Crossplay or a Genderbent character (You must be cosplaying the opposite of your natural gender or the characters original gender)
      • Craftmanship: Accuracy to Character, Genderbent, Costume Quality
  • 2.8 Devices such as flash bombs, any kind of pyrotechnic device, or any type of device that causes staining or a large scattering of objects are prohibited. Scattering of some objects is allowed, but the cleaning up of said objects will cut into your running time of no more than 2 minutes. Using fire and liquids on stage are prohibited. Smoke-related special effects are prohibited.
  • 2.9 Permission is granted to Animethon to use any photographs/video taken as future promotion material for future events and dealings. Secondary Media coverage may be present at the event. All media captured by Secondary Media will be under their rules and regulations of fair media usage and not that of Animethon’s.

How to Register

  • 3.1 There are 2 ways to enter the contest:
    • 3.1.1 Pre-register via the website using the Crossplay Sign-Up Form. The form will ask you for basic information such as your name, contact information, the character and talent you are performing, as well as a summary of your skit. You will be able to upload music and photos. For more information, please see the form found here.
